Cold dust in the starburst galaxy M 82

چکیده

The starburst galaxy M82 has been mapped at λ1.2 mm using the IRAM 30–m telescope and the MPIfR 19–channel bolometer. The influence of the sidelobe pattern and the CO(2−1) line has been carefully analyzed. Based on this analysis, we conclude that the cold dust does not extend far into the halo as has been previously claimed. The total mass of dust in the inner 3 kpc of the galaxy is 7.5 · 10 M⊙. Assuming a solar gasto-dust ratio, the inferred total mass of gas is 7.5 · 10 M⊙ . Unlike in any other galaxy we find the CO(2−1) line emission to be clearly more extended than the λ1.2mm dust emission. A likely explanation for this exceptional behaviour, seen for the first time in galaxies, is heating of molecular gas by low–energy cosmic rays and soft X–rays in the halo of M82.

Far - infrared mapping of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 with ISOPHOT . ⋆

A 180 μm map and strip maps at 120 and 180 μm were obtained for the edge-on starburst galaxy NGC 253 with ISOPHOT, the photometer on board the Infrared Space Observatory. We compare these observations with those obtained by IRAS at 60 μm and 100 μm and derive the far–infrared spectral energy distribution at different locations in the galaxy. There is evidence for the presence of cold dust (T ≤ ...

SPIRE imaging of M 82: Cool dust in the wind and tidal streams*

M 82 is a unique representative of a whole class of galaxies, starbursts with superwinds, in the Very Nearby Galaxy Survey with Herschel. In addition, its interaction with the M 81 group has stripped a significant portion of its interstellar medium from its disk. SPIRE maps now afford better characterization of the far-infrared emission from cool dust outside the disk, and sketch a far more com...

The Extraordinary Mid-infrared Spectrum of the Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy Sbs 0335 052

SBS0335-052 is a blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) with one of the lowest known metallicities, Z∼Z⊙/41, making it a local example of how primordial starburst galaxies and their precursors might appear. A spectrum obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope clearly shows silicate absorption features, emission lines of [SIV] and [NeIII], and puts strong upper limits...

Submillimeter Continuum Properties of Cold Dust in the Inner Disk and Outflows of M 82

Deep submillimeter (submm) continuum imaging observations of the starburst galaxy M82 are presented at 350, 450, 750 and 850μm wavelengths, that were undertaken with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii. The presented maps include a co-addition of submm data mined from the SCUBA Data Archive. The co-added data produce the deepest s...
